ซิงก์สเตียเรต, ซิงก์เซียมสเตียเรท, Zinc Stearate
ซิงค์สเตียเรต (Zn(C18H35O2)2)
Zinc stearate is a chemical substance that has a white,
fluffy, powdered appearance and is usually formed from a combination of stearic
acid and zinc oxide. It does not have a strong odor, although traces of a
slight fatty acid scent are not uncommon. Zinc stearate is sometimes referred
to as octadecanoic acid or zinc salt. Since zinc stearate will dissolve in
alcohol and not in water-based liquids, it is used in many different kinds of
commercial products. Its ability to repel water also makes it suitable for many
different kinds of applications. Because of this versatility, zinc stearate is
used by many different types of companies, from plastic industries to concrete
manufacturers. When used to make plastics, zinc stearate is combined with a
co-stabilizing soap called Ba-Cd to help stabilize the plastic. It does this by
mixing with the liquid, which helps make the material more fluid — called a
plasticizer. This same process is also used in the cosmetic industry to make
different kinds of makeup. It also has a use in the paint industry where zinc
stearate is added to lacquers and paint coatings for use as a flatting and
sanding agent. For concrete manufacturing, it is mixed as an additive for
waterproofing concrete; this same process is also used to waterproof other
products, such as, rockwools, textiles, and paper products. Even when left in
powdered form, it can be used as a drying lubricant or dusting agent for rubber
products.
Zinc stearate is a "zinc soap" that is widely
used industrially. In this context, soap is used in its formal sense, a metal
"salt" of a fatty acid. It is a white solid that repels water. It is
insoluble in polar solvents such as alcohol and ether but soluble in aromatic
hydrocarbons (e.g., benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons) when heated. It is
the most powerful mold release agent among all metal soaps. It contains no
electrolyte and has a hydrophobic effect. Its main application areas are the
plastics and rubber industry where it is used as a releasing agent and
lubricant which can be easily incorporated. Zinc carboxylates, e.g. basic zinc
acetate, adopt complex formulas, and are not simply dicarboxylates of zinc.
Instead the formula for most zinc carboxylates is Zn4O(O2CR)6, consisting of a Zn4O6+ core with carboxylate
ligands spanning the edges.
Applications
It is widely used as a release agent for the production
of many kinds of objects rubber, polyurethane, polyester processing system,
powder metallurgy. These applications exploit its "non-stick"
properties. In cosmetics, zinc stearate is a lubricant and thickening to
improve texture. It is an "activator" for rubber vulcanization by
sulfur and accelerators. As discovered in the early days of vulcanization, zinc
has a beneficial effect on the reaction of the sulfur with the polyolefin. The
stearate is a form of zinc that is highly soluble in the nonpolar medium of the
polyolefins. Being lipophilic, it functions as a phase transfer catalyst for
the saponification of fats
Zinc Stearate is a white coloured poweder. It is
insoluble in water, but dissolves well in aromatic compounds like benzene and
chlorinated hydrocarbons on heating. In fact, zinc stearate repels water
(hydrophobic). It is the zinc salt of stearic acid. It is insoluble in alcohol
and ethers. It is a very powerful mold resease agent. Zinc stearate does not
contain any electrolyte.
Zinc stearate is used in the pharmaceutical industry and
the cosmetic products like face powder to improve the smoothness and adhesion.
It is used in paint industry as a gloss imparting agent and a grinding agent.
In plastic and rubber processing, zinc stearate is ued as a releasing agent and
lubricant which can be easily incorporated. It is used as as a metal release
agent in rubber, polyurethane and polyester processing system.
Suggested Application
In cosmetics like face powder & pharmaceuticals to
improve properties of smoothness & adhesion.
In paints.
In plastic & rubber processing.
Applications of Zinc Stearate, Next
1. Combined with other metal soaps, it is used as a
stabilizer in all nn-toxic applications in PVC processing ; i.e. film for food
packaging , drinking straw, PVC materials for medical purposes. It gives good
early color and lubrication.
2. Water proofing agent.
3. Anti-sticking agent and mould release agent in rubber
industry.
4. Inpaint it finds applications;
- In grinding of pigments / sanding sealer.
- Flattening agent - give matte finish
5. In pigment concentrates, elastomers, polystyrene, and
other light colored plastics.
6. Applications where Sulfur staining is not deaired.
